Annual review MEDCAN 2024
A new website as an information hub
In February we launched a completely redesigned website in four languages. This redesign was an important task in which all content was updated and adapted to the new regulations of the Narcotics Act. Our website serves as a central point of contact for all cannabis patients in Switzerland who are looking for information on the medical use of cannabis and obtaining a prescription. We also publish addresses of doctors and pharmacies there to make it easier for those affected to find medical support. However, information sharing remains challenging due to legal restrictions. Since cannabis is considered a narcotic, pharmacies are not allowed to advertise and can only provide limited information - a hurdle that we as Association compensate for through our educational work.
General meeting with personal reunion
In April our general meeting took place in the Wipkingen Community Center in Zurich. After a long time with only online events, we were able to meet in person again on site. The mood was therefore very tidy and happy. The meeting itself went quickly. Afterwards there was Lebanese food and lively discussions. It was a nice opportunity to see the Association members again after such a long time online in a relaxed atmosphere.
MEDCAN at CannaTrade 2024
A highlight like every year was our participation in CannaTrade, the international hemp trade fair in Zurich. From May 24th to 26th we were present in Hall 622 to provide information about the medical use of cannabis. With over 10,000 visitors and 150 exhibitors, the trade fair offered an ideal platform for exchange. The organizers dedicated a lot of space to the medical sector this year, which made us very happy. Our stand was well attended and many of those affected appreciated the opportunity to find out directly about the medical use of cannabis. Our Vice President Simon took part in a medical panel on Friday where he joined cannabis industry professionals to discuss the advances and challenges in cannabis prescribing. On Sunday, Franziska and Simon were able to give a talk about MEDCAN's 10 years of work. The large amount of feedback from all sides strengthens our commitment - the positive changes in the lives of many patients through legally prescribed cannabis motivate us to continue to provide education and support. And unfortunately we are not yet where we want to be. Our work is far from over. Far too many people didn't know that the narcotics law had changed.
Summer break and hem parade
After a busy spring, we needed a summer break to recharge our batteries. At the end of August we were represented at the Hemparade in the Kulturfabrik Wetzikon. This cozy Saturday event offered the opportunity to obtain comprehensive information about hemp and its medical effects. Our stand attracted interested parties, and our vice president Simon Winistörfer gave a lecture on the current situation and how to get a recipe.
Intensive exchange with experts and the cannabis industry
At the end of October we met in Zurich with representatives of the Swiss cannabis industry and medical experts from the Swiss Society for Cannabis in Medicine (SGCM). We initiated this exchange in the spring and the discussions on site were very constructive. It was agreed to work together more closely in the future to inform and educate the Swiss population objectively and scientifically about the medical use of cannabis. The aim is to break down prejudices and bring people closer to this new medical treatment option.
“We, the patients”
We have also been networked at an international level for some time now. Together with patient organizations from Spain, England and Ireland, we founded the group “We, the Patients”. Together we are committed to changing the perception of the medical use of cannabis worldwide. In the future we will organize events by patients for patients. There you will learn everything you need to know about medical use and how to get a prescription in your country. The first successful patient event took place in Madrid in October. Events are also planned for 2025 in Zurich, where, on the one hand, those affected will talk about their experiences and, on the other hand, well-known scientists and medical experts will provide information about the effects and prescription of cannabis. The first event on neurodegenerative diseases will take place in February. More information will follow soon.
Our Telegram channel serves as an exchange platform
Our Telegram channel , which now has over 500 members, is also an exchange opportunity for cannabis patients Here, those affected can exchange information about their experiences with cannabis medications and the prescription modalities. Medical professionals also take part in the discussions. The channel is one of the few reliable sources for information on the medical use of cannabis.
Outlook and thanks to our supporters
The year 2024 was busy with a lot of volunteer work. Our members do valuable work every day to make the medical use of cannabis better known. A big thank you goes to everyone who has accompanied us on this journey. Our work would not be possible without the support and trust of our members and supporters. However, there is still an intensive path and a lot of work ahead of us before cannabinoid-based medicine can be made available to all those affected in the form they need and at affordable prices.
Do you think our work is important? Then become a member or support us with a donation ! Together we are committed to making access to the medical use of cannabis easier and more affordable for everyone.
